Your own Life Coach - Heidi Röthlisberger

What is essential for me

I have great respect for all the many ways and possibilities that we can think, live and act. I find this diversity especially in books and therefore I love all kind of stories. Think of all those different authors who challenge us, who share their ideas and inspirations and make us part of their stories. Our own small world becomes richer and more alive.

I love an easy lifestyle. I feel comfortable in warm sunny countries near the sea, where you can drink a cup of coffee outside, surrounded by beautiful flowers. Where you can have a chat with your neighbour and where “Siesta Time” is something everybody cares about.

I love to work with people who are excited about life, are ready to move forward, enjoy challenges and really want a partner to support them in attaining their next level of excellence. I work only with individuals who are ready for a fabulous and spectacular life.

For a development worker, as I was for many years, it is so important to make yourself dispensable. The same mindset is applicable to a coach. It is one of the best things to realize that people can move forward, alone, powerful and keen to experience new adventures.

In the English language there is this amazing word: Curiosity. Being curious, being inquisitive, being able to wonder about everything and everybody, to find the diamonds in ourselves, is something I go for. To share all these things, to encourage others, to bring out the best in each of us, to experience what incredible things are possible the moment we take off…!

I have learnt a lot in my life through observing. Nature is a great place for that. Being outside and being aware of what is happening. Surrounded by the ocean, by endless landscapes, being in the mountains with all their beauty, our colourful world, all those aromas and flavours, the shrieking of seagulls or utter silence and tranquillity!

For how long have I worked as a Life Coach on the phone?

I founded my business seven years ago and work exclusively on the telephone. I have a full coaching practice and more than 5000 coaching hours behind me. My clients usually stay with me for between six and twelve months and very often they book me years later for another coaching period.

I usually coach in English or German, and sometimes also in Spanish. Most of my clients live in Europe or in Asia . To work with me one only needs a telephone and an internet connection.
Although English is not my mother tongue my English speaking clients love the intercultural exchange because this brings us a totally new way of perceiving life.

Why do I coach on the phone?

To be very honest I really love using the phone for a good discussion . For me the phone is the quickest medium for getting into contact, to exchange ideas, to look for solutions, to communicate and to solve misunderstandings. From my experience I feel that the phone is sometimes even more efficient than a personal talk, an e-mail or an SMS.

Why would you use a Telephone Coach?

If your time is very limited, however you would like to move forward personally and in your professional life, then you might benefit from having coaching over the phone. Even 10 minutes coaching per week (called Laser Coaching) might produce lots of results.

If the telephone is your favourite medium, then of course I would suggest you to try out coaching over the phone. If you are a very open person, if you are curious, if you are somebody who loves to experiment with new things, why not give yourself a chance and call me.

Talking to a coach over the phone is a very discreet affair. If, for various personal or professional reasons, you need lots of distance, anonymity or protection you will appreciate this medium

If you live abroad, far away from home, and yet want to have a coach, you also might choose a telephone coach. My own coaches lived in Canada and in the US .

And don't forget: some people are not mobile, either because of illness or small children at home, because they live in the country or far away abroad, they might not have access to a local coach. Coaching on the telephone would be a great alternative for them.

What qualifies me to be your Life Coach on the Telephone?

I've been trained in one of the oldest and most qualified Coach Training schools in the US, at Coach University in Colorado. I received three years coach training over the phone. I have never been there. The whole training took place over so called teleclasses. Participants, from all over the world, met together in teleconferences.

Additionally I've been trained as a teleclass leader at Coach University . That is a training which enables you to moderate and give teleseminars on the telephone. I was also trained in coaching groups over the phone – a great way to benefit from all the strength of the other participants.

Two years ago I finished the MCC, the Master Certified Coach. This is the highest designation one can get from the ICF, the International Coach Federation. They expect more than 2500 individual Coaching hours from you, a Certified Coach Training and an examination.

What is the difference between coaching Face to Face and coaching on the Phone?

On the telephone we are not able to communicate through our bodies. The whole body language is missing, for example shaking hands or looking each others into each eye.
So we have to make use of other senses and we have to know how to do it.

A coach trained with coaching on the phone has to be an expert in listening and needs many auditory skills. Only then he can completely comprehend the other person. Such a coach works mainly with language patterns, with his voice and with volume. He is trained to listen between the lines. He needs special questioning techniques; the coach has to be very disciplined and present and be able to understand the use of words.

Yes and of course, without a smile and without a friendly atmosphere during the call, telephone coaching would not be possible. We can accomplish so much more if we feel good.

Some characteristics of a qualified Coach!

A qualified coach usually goes through a Certified Coach Training recognized through a well known Coach Association. He is aware of all the tools you learn during such training.

A coach is usually an excellent listener, a coach lends support, challenges clients, a coach is motivational, guides the clients, collaborates with clients and helps his or her clients to evolve, a coach asks powerful questions, understands and is a master of strategies.

It takes usually two years to master this professional skill set of coaching.

Every qualified coach also has his own mentor coach or supervisor.
We continuously train and educate ourselves.

Some ideas how you can choose a really good coach!

Most professional coaches offer complimentary sessions. If you don't feel comfortable with a coach during this session try another one. That coach might not have been the right one for you, there are others. Coaching is an investment, so you should get a lot back.

During the complimentary session make sure that you are the one who is important. The coach should help you in clarifying what is going on. After the session you should know how to move forward and how the coach might be able to help you in that.

And don't forget: After a coaching call you should feel better than before!

And additional highlights about my other life:

While working for three years during the civil war in Lebanon I realized how precious life really is.

Raising and educating my children among Indians in South America for more than 6 years I was exposed to many different ways of looking at life and numerous communication skills.

The West Himalayas known for its beauty as well as its poverty taught me to be patient, calm and in the moment
. Together with my family I worked there for three years in a development program.

I am now living in Switzerland with my family.
I look forward to move to the sunny Mediterranean within some years.
